This program will take place on Saturday, February 21st, 2009 (9:30am to 3:00pm) and consists of hands-on activities led by UC Berkeley engineering students and demonstrations of student engineering projects such as solar-powered cars. Through this program, we hope to introduce the subject of engineering to students and create interest in math and science at the 4th to 6th grade levels.
Engineering for Kids Day is designed and hosted by UC Berkeley engineering societies: Pi Tau Sigma (Mechanical Engineering Honor Society), Society of Women Engineers, Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honors Society), American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Bioengineering Honor Society, BMES (Biomedical Engineering Society), Engineering World Health, Eta Kappa Nu (EECS Honor Society), American Society of Civil Engineers, Chi Epsilon (Civil Engineering Honor Society), and Engineers for a Sustainable World.
The program will consist of a multitude of hands-on activities including:
- Programming and commanding robots
- Basic electrical circuitry
- Liquefaction of dams
- DNA study
- Disease modeling
- Sustainability and alternative energies
- Aerodynamics
Engineering for Kids Day is completely free for student participants and lunch will be provided at the event.
Interested students or teachers should RSVP for this event by signing-up below. (Also please ensure every participating student brings a completed and signed Permission Form on the day of the event.)

FAQs
|
Do I need to pre-register my child in order to participate in the event?
No, you do not have to register your child for the event, but doing so reserves your student a spot for all of the activities (and a meal ticket). If families cannot make it to the event for the whole day, they are still encouraged to attend the event for any part of the day, as the activities and demonstrations will continue until 3pm. However, the more time the students spend at Engineering for Kids Day, the more they will learn as well as having a better opportunity to receive prizes based on event participation.
Do you need a list of attendance from us as a school, or can parents sign up their children individually and attend with their children? It would be much easier to do it this way as opposed to coordinating a list of those attending, and then arranging for chaperones and transportation.
Parents can sign up individually. A registration needs to be submitted to us that accounts for each participating child so that we can have an accurate count of the number of kids participating.
Can a 7th grader attend? I have two children, 4th and 7th grades, and both would be very interested.
Children older than the recommended age group can attend, but it should be noted that the activities are designed for students grades 4th to 6th. Therefore, some of the activities might seem a bit easy for a student in a grade above 6th grade. Conversely, students below 4th grade are welcome to attend; however, the activities might prove to be difficult for the student to fully understand. The benefits of the program are related to the learning level of the student.
Do I need to be there to accompany my child?
Not necessarily. If you feel that your child is responsible enough to be left unsupervised, then you may leave your child at the event. However, most parents choose to either hang out in the back of the classrooms and observe their child participating in the activities, while others wait in the hallway and mingle with other parents.
Can we help in any way?
